Kedarnath is one of the most revered shrines in Hinduism and forms an essential part of the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand, which includes Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri. Located at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) in the Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India.
Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and nestled near the source of the Mandakini River, the Kedarnath Temple offers a profound spiritual experience in the lap of the Himalayas. Every year, thousands of devotees undertake this challenging but rewarding pilgrimage as part of their spiritual journey.
The distance between Delhi and Kedarnath is approximately 450 to 500 kilometers, depending on the route taken. However, since Kedarnath is not directly accessible by motorable roads beyond Gaurikund, travelers need to first reach Gaurikund via Haridwar, Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, and Sonprayag. From Gaurikund, the rest of the journey involves a trek or helicopter ride.
Typically, the journey from Delhi to Gaurikund takes around 10–12 hours by road (or longer depending on traffic and weather), and then the trek to Kedarnath follows.
Rishikesh is a popular starting point for the Char Dham Yatra. The distance from Rishikesh to Kedarnath is around 220 kilometers by road to Gaurikund. This scenic route takes pilgrims through the beautiful towns of Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Guptkashi.
Travelers generally take 8–10 hours to reach Gaurikund from Rishikesh, after which the trekking part of the yatra begins.
The Kedarnath trek distance from Gaurikund to the temple is 16 kilometers. This trail passes through scenic but steep and rugged mountain terrain, crossing places like Jungle Chatti, Bheembali, Linchauli, and Kedarnath Base Camp before reaching the temple complex.
The trek is moderately difficult and can take anywhere from 6 to 10 hours depending on the individual’s fitness level and weather conditions. For those unable to trek, pony, palki (palanquin), and even helicopter services are available during the yatra season.
Trekking to Kedarnath is not just a physical journey, but a deeply spiritual one. Pilgrims walk amidst towering mountains, dense forests, and gushing streams, all while chanting the name of Lord Shiva. The air is filled with devotion, and each step takes you closer to a divine experience.
Trekking to Kedarnath during the early summer (May-June) or post-monsoon (September-October) is ideal, as the weather remains relatively clear and pleasant during these months.
Whether you're planning the entire Char Dham Yatra or just a visit to Kedarnath, the journey is sure to leave a lasting impression on your heart and soul. With a challenging trek, breathtaking scenery, and spiritual energy, Kedarnath offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience that blends devotion, adventure, and natural beauty.
