If you are planning for the Char Dham Yatra in 2026, then there is one thing that you just can’t miss out-registration. It is not optional, it is not a formality, it is not something that you can do when you reach Haridwar. The Uttarakhand government has made it mandatory for every pilgrim to register before starting the yatra and there is a very good reason for it. Registration helps authorities keep a track of the pilgrims, manage the crowds and respond quickly in case of an emergency in the mountains. With lakhs of people visiting these shrines every season,
The good news is that the process is totally free and you can do it right from the comfort of your home. This guide will help you through every step so that you don’t get confused on the official portal.
1- Why Is Char Dham Yatra Registration Mandatory?
As per the travel policy of the government of Uttarakhand, it is necessary to get yourself and your vehicles registered before starting your journey to Char Dham and Hemkund Sahib. When you arrive at each shrine, you also have to check in yourself at the destination. This may sound like extra work, but it is for your own safety.
The mountains are unpredictable. Landslides, extreme weather and medical emergencies are more common than people think. If something goes wrong, being registered means the government knows you’re on the route - and that can make a real difference. Your Yatra Registration Letter also has a QR code which is scanned at each dham for verification. So make sure you keep it with yourself all the time during the yatra
Registration is absolutely free. On the official portal, registering is free of charge. If anyone is requesting money to do this for you is either a middleman or a scammer, so stay aware of this type of scam.
2- What You Need Before You Start
Keep these things in place before opening the registration portal. Having all these things with you, so it will make the whole process smooth and fast:

It's honestly more convenient than the web portal if you're doing this from your phone.

6-What Happens After Registration - Verification at Each Dham
Registration is just the first half. When you reach each shrine you actually have to verify yourself at the verification point. There they will scan the QR code in your registration letter. Verification checkpoints have been established by the government near every dham - Janki Chatti for Yamunotri, Gangotri temple for Gangotri, Sonprayag for Kedarnath, and Pandukeshwar for Badrinath.
After verification, you will also have to collect a darshan slot token from the queue token slot counter. This keeps the crowd at the temple in check so you aren't stuck standing hours in a line. It's a clever system - use it.
Important Things to Keep in Mind
Registration is completely free - don't pay someone else to do it for you
Each pilgrim requires their own registration - one form covers all members of a group, but individual details are required
Vehicle registration is separate - register it before driving to the Dhams.
For Kedarnath helicopter booking, that's a separate process, not this portal
The helpline number for Tourist Care Uttarakhand is 1364 and 0135-3520100 - save on your phone before you leave
You can also verify your Yatra Letter anytime
Registering for Char Dham Yatra 2026 takes less than 10 minutes if you have all your documents ready. It's a small step that makes a big difference - for your own safety and for the people managing this massive pilgrimage every year. Do it before you book your hotels, before you plan your route, and definitely before you leave home. The mountains will wait for you - just make sure the paperwork is sorted first.
