Char Dham Yatra isn’t a trip for millions of people, it’s a journey of once in a lifetime. Four sacred shrines, one amazing Himalayan trail and an experience that will stay with you long after you return home. If you are planning to do it in 2026 and don't know where to start, then this guide is for you.
1- What Is Char Dham Yatra?
The Char Dham means “four abodes” is a term used for four Hindu temples in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. That is Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Hindus believe that one’s sins are washed away by visiting all four in one yatra and it leads to moksha (liberation). But even if you're not religious, the sheer beauty of these places is worth the journey.
The shrines are located at high altitudes in the middle of glaciers, rivers and mountains. Lakhs of pilgrims make this journey every year between May and November. That is not easy.
2- Best Time to Do Char Dham Yatra in 2026
The temple opens every year around April or May (after Akshaya Tritiya) and closes around October or November (around Diwali). Here's a general idea of what each season feels like:
May - June: Best time for Char Dham Yatra - temples freshly open, the weather is so pleasant there Make sure you go early in May if you want peace.
July - August: Monsoon makes everything look stunning, but it comes with trouble. Landslides can easily block the roads for days. So if it’s your first time, it’s probably better to skip this season.
September - October: A second great time to visit because the rush fades away, the skies clears up, and the weather stays comfortably cool.
Quick Tip
Register on the official Char Dham Yatra portal before you leave. Registration is mandatory and helps authorities track pilgrims in case of emergencies on the route.
3- The Entire Char Dham Yatra Route
The journey generally begins from Yamunotri and ends at Badrinath. Many people start in Haridwar or Rishikesh, the main base cities. Here's the route:
1
Haridwar / Rishikesh
For the Starting point, you can take a train or a bus from Delhi (approx. 5–6 hrs)
2
Yamunotri
Source of the river Yamuna - 6 km trek from Janki Chatti
3
Gangotri
Source of the river Ganga - accessible by road, no trek needed
4
Kedarnath
Lord Shiva's abode - 16 km trek or helicopter from Phata/Sersi
5
Badrinath
Final stop - Lord Vishnu's shrine, accessible by road
The entire route covers roughly 1,000 km by road and takes anywhere from 10 to 14 days if you're doing all four. Don't rush it. Such places deserve time, not a tick box.
4-
Most pilgrims start from Delhi. Here are the modes of travel:
By Train: You can get a train from Delhi to Haridwar or Rishikesh. From there you can easily book the car for the mountains.
By Road: Haridwar is 220 km from Delhi and is about 5 hours from Delhi by road. Many people book private cabs for the entire yatra.
By Helicopter: Kedarnath helicopter booking is available from Phata, Sersi, Guptkashi, and Sitapur. Book well in advance - slots fill within days of opening.
Important
Kedarnath helicopter bookings open on the IRCTC website. Set an alert - they sell out within hours during peak season. Don't wait till the last minute.

5- What You Should Pack for Char Dham Yatra
Badrinath is at 3,133 m, Kedarnath at 3,583 m. Even in May and June, nights are cold. Here's what you actually need:
Warm layers: Thermal innerwear, a fleece jacket, and a waterproof windcheater - all three, not just one.
Trekking shoes: Especially for the Yamunotri trek and the Kedarnath trek. Avoid chappals on the trail.
Rain gear: A compact poncho takes no space and can save your day during surprise showers.
Medicines: You must carry some basics medicine for cold, stomach, and pain. Don't depend on finding a pharmacy in the mountains.
Cash: ATMs in the hills are unreliable. Carry enough for 3–4 days at a stretch.
ID proof: Required for registering for Char Dham and for helicopter bookings. Make a photocopy, too.

6- Practical Tips for First-Time Pilgrims
Start slow: Your first day in the hills, rest. Don't jump into a trek right after arriving at altitude.
Book your stay in advance: GMVN guesthouses are reliable and cheap. Book online before you go, for sure.
Travel in a group: Solo travel on remote Himalayan routes is possible, but not recommended for first-time visitors or senior pilgrims.
Respect the temples: Dress Code to be followed, no shorts or sleeveless shirts. Remove your shoes before entering any holy place.
Do not litter: These are sacred, ecologically sensitive areas. Please bring the small bag for the trash of yours.
Stay updated: Weather changes fast in the mountains. Check road status on the Uttarakhand tourism website daily.
