How to Reach Chopta from Delhi? Complete Travel Guide 2026

Chopta is one of those destinations that most Delhi travelers discover only after getting tired of crowded Manali and Mussoorie. Sitting at 2,680 meters in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, it is the base for the Tungnath-Chandrashila trek - home to the world's highest Shiva temple - and genuinely one of the best weekend escapes from Delhi right now.

If you are planning a Chopta trip in 2026, Voyagers Beat has curated weekend departures from Delhi with stays, trek, and transport all covered. Or if you prefer to go on your own, here is everything you need.

1) Delhi to Chopta Distance

The distance from Delhi to Chopta is approximately 430–450 km. There is no direct train or flight, so the final distance you have to cover is always by road.

Two main routes:

  • Delhi - Haridwar - Rishikesh - Rudraprayag - Ukhimath - Chopta (most popular)

  • Delhi - Meerut - Kotdwar - Lansdowne - Rudraprayag - Ukhimath - Chopta (scenic, less traffic)

2) How to Reach Chopta from Delhi

1. By Road - Self Drive or Taxi

The road trip is one of the most popular ways to travel. Roads are smooth until Rishikesh comes; after Rishikesh, the real mountain driving begins.

Via Haridwar-Rishikesh (Recommended): Delhi - Haridwar (220 km) - Rishikesh -Devprayag - Srinagar Garhwal - Rudraprayag - Ukhimath - Chopta

  • Total distance: Approx. 450 km

  • Travel time: 11-13 hours

  • Leave Delhi by 4-5 AM to reach before sunset

Key checkpoint: At Rudraprayag, take the road to Kedarnath. About 35 km ahead at Kund, turn left towards Ukhimath. From Ukhimath, Chopta is 28 km via Makku Bend.

There are no direct buses from Delhi to Chopta. But you can-

  • Take an overnight bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Ukhimath or Guptkashi (8 PM–11 PM). From Ukhimath, a taxi to Chopta costs approx. ₹500-700.

  • Or take a bus to Rishikesh/Haridwar (runs 24x7), then a shared cab to Rudraprayag, then a taxi to Chopta.

New in 2026: GMOU has started the direct bus from Rudraprayag to Chopta - departs at 9:30 AM, reaches Chopta by at 12:30 PM.

6) Important Tips

  • Leave Delhi by 4-5 AM. Driving at night on mountain roads after Rudraprayag is risky.

  • Fill the fuel in Ukhimath. Do not skip this, because this is the last petrol pump before Chopta.

  • Carry cash. There is no ATM in Chopta. Ukhimath has one, but it runs out of cash in peak season.

  • Only Jio/Airtel works in Ukhimath. The signal starts dropping towards Chopta - so make sure you download offline maps before leaving Rudraprayag.

  • Do not follow Google Maps blindly. The map sometimes shows the wrong Chopta (there is a Chopta village). After Ukhimath, the Ukhimath-Gopeshwar-Guptkashi road is to be taken.

7) Conclusion

Chopta is a complete trip from Delhi - Tungnath trek, Chandrashila sunrise, Deoria Tal, and fresh mountain air, all in a 3-day weekend. The best way to get there is by road, and it takes 2 weeks to plan it.
